5 Stars: This book has ten chapters which show how fractions are used in the real world. Each chapter presents a different story which explains how the character needs to use fractions to proceed in their task. From cooking, to pizza slices, to driving, to music – this book really shows the learner why they need to understand fractions.

This is a creative teaching tool. It would be good for those who need concrete examples in order to absorb information. It would also be a nice choice for those who learn best by reading things for themselves.

Overall, it’s worthy of adding to your homeschool, classroom, or personal library.

This little book makes math and fractions come to life in real world situations. I enjoyed the quick, fun stories and the problems at the end. I'm sure my mom would have loved to use this book with me when I was a kid- always asking questions.

5 Stars: A fantastic, fun and educational (short) chapter book about fractions. Focusing mostly on the interactions between numbers and less on the story (word problem), Reddin includes explanations for the logic behind each problem as well as addresses some common mistakes. I greatly appreciate how Fractions are Math shows that fractions are not only a part of everyday life, but not to be feared or avoided.

The mom in chapter 1 is my spirit animal. I, too, refuse to do the work but am more than happy to work through problems with my kids! Love seeing that presence modeled! As someone in the midst of teaching a 7 year old fractions (addition and multiplication!), this timely book is an excellent resource. I plan to read a chapter a day with my student, go over the math, then change the numbers so they can do the exact same type of problem for themselves to gain confidence and hopefully further develop that neural pathway! The appendix already an extra set for readers to use.

5 Stars: Fractions are Math does a nice job showing kids that fractions are not something that only exists on a worksheet. Kelly Reddin connects them to recipes, shopping, estimating height, music, and other situations children may already recognize. That everyday approach makes the concept feel much less intimidating.

As a homeschool mom, I am always interested in math books that give me another way to explain a concept when the standard lesson is not clicking. I liked that each chapter uses a different child or situation rather than turning the book into a long explanation of rules. It feels more like a collection of examples you could pull from during a lesson or hand to a child who keeps asking when they will ever use fractions in real life.

This is aimed at roughly grades three through five, which feels like the right age for the format and examples. I could see it being useful as a supplement for homeschool, classroom math, or just extra practice for a child who learns better when numbers are connected to something concrete.
